| THE GATESHEAD DISPENSARY 1832-1946 Founded after the outbreak of cholera in 1831 to assist in preserving the public health and make medicine available to the poor. The Dispenary occupied this house 1855-1946. -- This plaque was unveiled on the12th October 1982 in the 150th anniversary year of the Charity by the Mayr of Gateshead, Councillor R.Rudge J.P. to mark its achievement for Gateshead. |

| THE 1854 FIRE The site of Wilson's spinning mill which caught fire and exploded late on the 5th October 1854 causing the great fire at Newcastle Quayside from Sandhill to Fenwick's Entry. - THE 1854 FIRE The site of Wilson's worsted factory which caught fire early on the 6th October 1854. The fire spread to a chemical warehouse which exploded. The Quaysides on both sides of the river suffered severe damage. 53 died. |

| The old Scotswood Bridge crossed the river 110 feet downstream of this point & was completed in 1831, being at that time one of the longest spans in the world (367 ft.) The suspension chains which gave rise to its name of the Chain Bridge were replaced in 1931 by wire ropes (which had been used in the construction of the Sydney Harbour Bridge) when the deck wasreconstructed. The old bridge was demolished in 1967 leaving only the north abutment to show the old crossing point. |
