The Friends of Berwick and District Museum and Archives were established in 1993 to support the work of the Berwick Record Office and Borough Museum and Art Gallery. They help both services in many ways - transcribing, indexing and typing sources in the Record Office; invigilating at the Museum; and helping to buy additional resources and equipment.
The Friends also organise lectures in the area and hold a Summer Outing and Churchyard Survey every year. For those Friends who do not live nearby, they also produce a quarterly newsletter with information about each service and interesting articles about local and family history.
At present, the Friends are also working on two projects. The Oral History Project has resulted in over 70 tapes of people's memories of their lives and events in North Northumberland and is an ongoing project. At the same time, the Friends are also involved in a Maritime History project which aims to document all aspects of the life of the Port of Berwick ( St Abbs to Alnmouth), both past and present. This work includes producing databases from sources kept in the Berwick Office - Ship Sailings to and from Berwick, 1808 onwards - and indexed transcripts of information from the Berwick Shipping registers, 1823 onwards.
If you are interested in joining the Friends and supporting the work of the Record Office, just print out and return the application form to the Berwick-upon-Tweed Record Office with your subscription. Please note, payment must be made in sterling.
