"Alnwick is the county town of Northumberland, 310 miles from London. Seated on the little river Alne, it is populous and well built. It has a fine market square, surrounded with piazzas. One of the old gates is still standing. There is an ancient castle near it, the seat of the Duke of Northumberland. Market, Saturday. Population, 6626."
