National Gazetteer (1868) - Kidland Lee
"KIDLAND LEE, an extra parochial place in the W. division of Coquetdale
ward, county Northumberland, 10 miles N.W. of Rothbury. It is an extensive
tract of country, being 10 miles in length by 8 in width, containing the
hamlets of Whiteburn Shank, Milkhope, Barrow Burn, and Rowhope. On the N.
of the river Alvine is Mernmerkirk Hill, with its ruins. It is sheltered on
the E. by Milkhope, which has some traces of Roman encampments, and on the
W. by Heigh Rig. The whole of this mountain range is let to wealthy farmers
residing elsewhere, but who are severally represented by their shepherds.
Sir Thomas Digby Legard, Bart., of Ganton Hall, Yorkshire, is chief
landowner."
